Combining Line Balancing Methods and Discrete Event Simulation: A Case Study from a Metalworking Company

Abstract: In this study, we consider a real-life Line Balancing Problem (LBP) at a metalworking company. Based on the concerns of the company's managers, the number of workstations is considered as the main performance criteria for line balancing, while line efficiency and smoothness are considered as the second and the third performance criteria. Two alternative line configurations, i.e., the straight line and the U-shaped line, are considered in the study as a company request. The Grouping Evolution Strategy (GES) alg… Show more

“…The austenitic stainless steel X2CrNiMo17-12-2, which has a basic chemical composition (wt%) ( Table 1 ) was used as a counter body (slipper) for all test parameters. This steel was chosen because the use of similar materials is avoided when constructing parts exposed to adhesive wear [ 19 , 20 , 21 ] and because of its resistance to acids and intercrystalline corrosion [ 22 ].…”

“…Using Equation ( 1), the multi-objective problem is converted to a single-objective function again. This function is coded in the CPLEX application and the optimal answer is found by the branch and bound method [55][56][57][58]. It is mentioned that using average of the data, each sample will be an input for the problem.…”

“…They found that the U-shaped assembly line has a better performance considering the JIT principles. Mirzaei et al [ 21 ] studied a real case problem of ALB at a metal manufacturing company, concerning the efficiency and smoothness indexes of the assembly line. They considered two main types of assembly lines such as type I and type II, and utilized an evolution strategy algorithm to optimize them.…”
