Combining In-Depth Biographical Interviews with the LIVES History Calendar in Studying the Life Course of Children of Immigrants

Abstract: The use of the life course perspective to study migration is of increasing interest in the field. A majority of the research on first-and second-generation residents is based on quantitative methodological designs that mainly focus on different aspects of their insertion into the host society. “…Continuing, I discuss practitioners' narratives and experiences via “biographical interviews.” More specifically, the biographical interview method here used situates itself at the intersection of a “contextual approach” to biographical interviews, that is primarily concerned with the “realism” of the narrative gathered; and an “interpretative approach” which poses its emphasis on the socially constructed nature of the narratives and their fictional character (e.g., Roberts, 2002 ; Nilsen and Brannen, 2010 ; Gomensoro and Burgos Paredes, 2017 :157). As the “contextual approach” it is concerned with the “lived life,” the “told story,” and the “self-interpretation” of social actors' life, although it is critical of its realist epistemology and of any naïve reading of social actors' narratives of self-determination.…”
