Combining image analysis and thermal models for infrared scene simulations

Abstract: This paper describes an analysis/synt hesis simulation procedure for the generation of realistic infrared images of outdoor scenes. The approach is based on combining synthetic scenes with real images using segmentation algorithms and region analysis. At the analysis stage, the image is segmented into homogeneous regions. Each surface region is then attributed material properties and its orientation is computed. Next, a texture signal is extracted from the original image. At the synthesis stage, thermal models … Show more

“…In 1994, Gambotto [2] proposed an analysis/synthesis simulation procedure. Specific algorithms were developed to extract texture signal from VIS images based on the assumption that texture resulted from small changes in region properties such as: reflective or thermal properties and surface orientation, and texture signal was dependent on average luminance and contrast of the region.…”

“…In the research process, lots of scientific research institutions using the finite difference method for the calculation of the target temperature field in the infrared image simulation [3,4,5] . But this method is too complicated to calculate, it can hardly achieve the requirements of the simulation, even if introduce the result of the measured value or rough estimate to compute the equation.…”

“…The requirements for high fidelity synthetic image simulation differ quite dependent on the application area. Although various models have been developed to generate synthetic image of infrared scenes [2][3] [4][5] [6][7] [8], little work has been done to create high fidelity infrared image of bridge, which is of great interests in military. In this paper, a realistic model for infrared image synthesis of bridge based on its thermal energy transmission is proposed, which generates the infrared image of bridge at different time in a day as well as in different seasons of a year.…”
