Combining HoloLens and Leap-Motion for Free Hand-Based 3D Interaction in MR Environments

Abstract: The ability to interact with virtual objects using gestures would allow users to improve their experience in Mixed Reality (MR) environments, especially when they use AR headsets. Today, MR head-mounted displays like the HoloLens integrate hand gesture based interaction allowing users to take actions in MR environments. However, the proposed interactions remain limited. In this paper, we propose to combine a Leap Motion Controller (LMC) with a HoloLens in order to improve gesture interaction with virtual objec… Show more

“…The virtual hand enables an isomorphic relationship between the actual and virtual hands [21]. Several works have utilized the virtual hand approach to interact with virtual elements [2], [22], [23]. The virtual pointer allows the selection of target items that are outside the user's reach with less actual hand movement.…”

“…The user studies fromFrutos-Pascual et al (2019) show that Meta 2 interactions are preferred, qualified as more natural and useable, and require less cognitive charge according to the participants. Several other articles from the screening(Jailungka and Charoenseang, 2018;Kim et al, 2018;Ababsa et al, 2020;Bautista et al, 2020) also highlight the good usability of grasping objects. HoloLens 1 interactions only outperform Meta 2 interactions in terms of precision for the scaling which is a manipulation task.…”

“…Users could interact with digital applications using freehand gestures tracked by cameras on the wearable glasses. Numerous user scenarios and applications could be supported, such as manipulation and interaction with digital virtual objects [57][58][59] and annotation drawing for creating visual and spatial references [60].…”
