Combining historical and geological data for the assessment of the landslide hazard: a case study from Campania, Italy

Abstract: Abstract. Past slope instabilities at Quindici (one of the five towns of Campania that was hit by catastrophic landslides on 5 May 1998) and in the Lauro Valley are investigated to improve the understanding of the landslide history in the area, as a mandatory step for the evaluation of the landslide hazard. The research was performed by combining information on past slope instabilities from both historical and geological data. From numerous historical sources an archive consisting of 45 landsliding and floodin… Show more

“…The study area of this paper is situated in Campania, in the Southern Apennines of Italy, a region which in recent decades has been affected by severe flash floods with serious damage and fatalities (Calcaterra et al, 2000(Calcaterra et al, , 2003Santo et al, 2002Santo et al, , 2012Santo et al, , 2015Del Prete and Mele, 2006;Santangelo et al, 2006Santangelo et al, , 2011Santangelo et al, , 2012Chirico et al, 2012;Alessio et al, 2013). The focus of the study consisted of small catch- ments with intermittent flow, generally occurring during and after heavy rainstorms, which can be hydrologically defined as SMCs.…”

“…As widely reported in literature [28][29][30][31][32], Campania region is very unstable in terms of the Earth's surface deformations. Intense urbanization, active volcanoes, complicated fault systems, landslides, subsidence, and hydrological instability (flooding) are the characteristics of this region [28][29][30][31][32]. 246 out of 652 sinkholes (38%) of the entire Italy are located in Campania region itself [31].…”

“…Case histories are used to understand the interaction of landslide activity and land use practices including mitigation measures (Calcaterra et al 2003;Klose et al 2016). Although case histories are limited to a local area by design, they can be used in the area of the Upper Weser to differentiate landslide mitigation over time in order to identify local construction patterns.…”
