A one-dimensional dual-continuum model (also known as dual-permeability model) was used to simulate the lateral component of subsurface runoff and variations in the natural 18 O content in hillslope discharge. Model predictions were analyzed using the GLUE generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation procedure. Model sensitivity was evaluated by varying two separate triplets of parameters. The first triplet consisted of key parameters determining the preferential flow regime, i.e., the volumetric proportion of the preferential flow domain, a first-order transfer coefficient characterizing soil water exchange between the two flow domains of the dual-continuum system, and the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the preferential flow domain. The second triplet involved parameters controlling exclusively the soil hydraulic properties of the preferential flow domain, i.e., its retention curve and hydraulic conductivity function. Results of the analysis suggest high sensitivity to all parameters of the first triplet, and large differences in sensitivity to the parameters of the second triplet. The sensitivity analysis also confirmed a significant improvement in the identifiability of preferential flow parameters when 18 O content was added to the objective function. K simulacím laterální složky podpovrchového proudění a změn koncentrace izotopu kyslíku 18 O ve vodě vytékající ze svahu byl použit jednorozměrný model využívající přístupu duálního kontinua. Nejistota modelových předpovědí byla odhadnuta s využitím metody zobecněné věrohodnosti (GLUE). Citlivost modelu byla zjišťována pomocí variací dvou samostatných trojic parametrů. První trojice sestávala z klíčových parametrů pro určení režimu preferenčního proudění, tj. objemového podílu preferenční domény proudění, přenosového koeficientu charakterizujícího výměnu vody mezi oběma doménami duálního systému a nasycené hydraulické vodivosti preferenční domény. Druhá trojice zahrnovala výhradně parametry určující hydraulické charakteristiky preferenční domény proudění, tj. retenční křivku a funkci hydraulické vodivosti. Z výsledků analýzy vyplývá vysoká citlivost modelu na všechny parametry z první trojice a velké rozdíly v citlivostech parametrů druhé trojice. Analýza dále potvrdila významné zlepšení zjistitelnosti parametrů preferenční domény v případě, kdy je do cílové funkce přidána koncentrace izotopu kyslíku 18 O.KLÍČOVÁ SLOVA: odtok ze svahu, preferenční proudění, model duální permeability, analýza citlivosti, GLUE, koncentrace 18 O.

Abstract:Evaluating the lateral saturated hydraulic conductivity, K s,l , of soil horizons is crucial for understanding and modelling the subsurface flow dynamics in many shallow hill soils. A K s,l measurement method should be able to catch the effects of soil heterogeneities governing hydrological processes at the scale of interest, in order to yield K s,l representative values over large spatial scales. This study aims to develop a field technique to determine spatially representative K s,l values of soil horizons of an experimental hillslope. Drainage experiments were performed on soil monoliths of about 0.12 m 3 volume, encased in situ with polyurethane foam. Median K s,l of 2450 mm·h −1 and 552 mm·h −1 were estimated in the A and B horizon, respectively. In the upper part of the B horizon, the median K s,l was 490 mm·h −1 , whereas it mostly halved near the underlying restricting layer. The decline of K s,l values with depth was consistent with the water-table dynamics observed at the same site in previous studies. Moreover, the K s,l from the monoliths were in line with large spatial-scale K s,l values reported from the hillslope in a prior investigation based on drain data analysis. This indicated that the large-scale hydrological effects of the macropore network were well represented in the investigated soil blocks. Our findings suggest that performing drainage experiments on large-volume monoliths is a promising method for characterizing lateral conductivities over large spatial scales. This information could improve our understanding of hydrological processes and can be used to parameterize runoff-generation models at hillslope and catchment scale.

Preferential flow dominates water movement and solute transport in boreal forest hillslopes.However, only a few model applications to date have accounted for preferential flow at forest sites. Here we present a parallel and coupled simulation of flow and transport processes in the preferential flow domain and soil matrix of a forested hillslope section in Kangaslampi, Finland, using a new, three-dimensional, physically based dual-permeability model. Our aim is to simulate lateral subsurface stormflow and solute transport at the slope during a chloride tracer experiment, and to investigate the role of preferential flow in the tracer transport. The model was able to mimic the observed tracer transport during tracer irrigation, but overestimated the dilution velocity of the tracer plume in the highly conductive soil horizons near the soil surface after changing the irrigation to tracer-free water. According to the model, 140 times more chloride was transported downslope in the preferential flow domain than in the soil matrix during the tracer irrigation. The simulations showed, together with reference simulations with a traditional one pore domain model, that a two pore domain approach was required to simulate the observed flow and transport event. The event was characterized by the transmissivity feedback phenomenon and controlled by preferential flow mechanisms, in particular by lateral by-pass flow. According to our results, accounting for the slowflow and fast-flow domains of soil, as well as the water and solute exchange between the domains, is essential for a successful simulation of flow and solute transport in preferential flow dominated hillslopes.
