Combining drones and satellite tracking as an effective tool for informing policy change in riparian habitats: a proboscis monkey case study

Abstract: Rapid reaction times to undesirable events are becoming increasingly important for the protection and conservation of habitats and species. This study demonstrates how Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, or drones, and satellite tracking of individual animals can be combined to identify important conservation issues (e.g. deforestation). When quickly disseminated, the information can lead to a rapid change in conservation policy. An adult male proboscis monkey, belonging to a one-male social group, was GPS tracked for 6… Show more

“…Although a comparison with ground truths calculated with a spectroradiometer would have been more effective, a test on compatibility between Sequoia and S2 data is also of scientific relevance, given the growing interest in the integration of data acquired from satellite and UAV platforms [48] for environmental applications [49,50], including PA [51][52][53], both from research and applied points of view.…”

“…UAV imagery has also been used to augment satellite imagery to inform land managers about compliance with resource management policy in riparian habitats. The UAV imagery enhanced both the temporal and spatial resolution of the satellite imagery providing an effective tool for monitoring compliance and for conservation of endangered habitat [41]. A study based in Sumatra [42] used a combination of Landsat and UAV imagery to monitor orangutan habitat.…”
