Combining Bulk Gels and Colloidal Dispersion Gels for Improved Volumetric Sweep Efficiency in a Mature Waterflood

Abstract: The Golfo San Jorge (GSJ) is located in the southern Argentina provinces of Santa Cruz and Chubut. This hydrocarbon basin occupies a surface area of approximately 170,000 km2, approximately 1/3 of which is offshore. Waterflood oil recovery in many GSJ reservoirs does not exceed 10% OOIP due to the combined effects of reservoir heterogeneity and, in many fields, an adverse mobility ratio. The most significant hydrocarbon accumulations of the basin occur in a series of fluvial and shallow lacustrine reservoirs w… Show more

“…Although these technologies are quite different from a technical standpoint, both are meant to improve volumetric sweep efficiency in mature waterfloods, especially in reservoirs with high permeability contrast and presence of thief zones. Documented CDG's projects include Daqing Field in China [96,102,103], El Tordillo [104] and Loma Alta Sur [105] fields in Argentina and in multiple U.S. oilfields [106,107]. Regarding BrightWater® [108], at the present time Milne Point in Alaska is the only field application discussed or documented in the public domain [109,110].…”

“…Despite this controversy, CDGs have demonstrated their capabilities through numerous positive field implementations, even discounting those in Daqing. Mack and Smith (1994) (Diaz et al, 2008;Muruaga et al, 2008;Smith et al 1996). Fig.…”

“…Smith (1989) discusses the transition pressure and its determination using the Transition Gel Unit (TGU) apparatus. The transition pressure is commonly determined as a means of quantifying/ characterizing gel strength, higher transition pressures signifying greater gel strength Mack and Smith, 1994;Muruaga et al, 2008;Ranganathan et al, 1998;Smith, 1989;Smith et al, 2000).…”
