Combining ability analysis for evaluation of maize hybrids under drought stress

Abstract: The present study was conducted to evaluate the genetic basis of yield related traits under drought conditions. A high heritability and genetic advance was found for plant height, 100-grain weight, grain rows per cob and grain yield per plant, suggesting that the selection of high yielding maize genotypes is possible through this approach. The high specific combining ability of W64SP, A495, A509 and A50-2 suggested that the pre-screening of inbred lines may be an efficient approach to develop higher yielding m… Show more

“…The variety Buhooth 106 did not differ with the variety 5012 as well as the Zm7 inbred significantly. When comparing the selected genotypes, the RSCA-S1-2 genotype, which had 17.80 rows, did not differ significantly with 4 genotypes, where the effectiveness of recurrent selection was in increasing the number of ear rows compared to the varieties, and when comparing the selected genotypes, we note the superiority of the RSCA genotypes over RGCA, as well as the superiority of the genotypes selected from the S2 recombination, most of them did not differ significantly, and this agrees with what was found by (25). The results showed that the values of and C.V were moderate, and they were 0.42 and 11.88 respectively, which indicates the average homogeneity of the data taken.…”

“…High significant GCA effects for grain yield and short days to 50% tasseling and days to 50% silking are important for enhancing yielding potential and early maturity [ 42 ]. Malook et al and Issa et al [ 44 , 45 ] identified inbred lines which had highest and positively significant GCA effects for grain yield and other agronomic traits under drought stress. GCA-female and male effects favorably influenced grain yield under FIRR, revealing the ability of lines eight inbred lines (Entry 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 15, 19 and 22) to develop high yielding hybrids and good parental source of genes for the trait, in contrast to inbred lines 11 and 12, which showed unfavorable GCA-female effects for the same trait.…”

“…This also provides a guideline for selection of elite parents and desirable cross combinations to be used in formulation of a systematic breeding project for rapid improvement. In this respect, general and specific combining abilities had been estimated under drought stress conditions in maize by several in vestigators ( Aminu et al, 2014;Al-Naggar et al, 2016b;Saif-ul-Malook et al, 2016;Ertiro et al, 2017 andMurtadha et al, 2018 ). Therefore, the present investigation was conducted to identify desirable parents and cross combinations as well as to gather information on the genetic behavior of grain yield and its contributing characters under water stress conditions.…”
