Combined Toxicity of Cannabidiol Oil with Three Bio-Pesticides against Adults of Sitophilus Zeamais, Rhyzopertha Dominica, Prostephanus Truncatus and Trogoderma Granarium

Abstract: The present study investigates the interaction between cannabidiol (CBD) oil and three biopesticides: Azatin and two baculovirus formulations (Madex and Helicovex), both separately and in combination, in order to investigate their interaction against adults of four major coleopteran stored-product pests: Sitophilus zeamais (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Rhyzopertha dominica (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae), Prostephanus truncatus (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) and Trogoderma granarium (Coleoptera: Dermestidae). CBD, which… Show more

“…The study further elucidated that these combinative agents induced the inhibition of enzyme pathways associated with oxidase, glutathione S-transferase and general esterase (ά-β-EST) of the tested insect pest [ 104 ]. Mantzoukas et al [ 105 ] stated that the cannabidiol ( Figure 3 ) present in the essential oil of the Cannabis plant synergized the commercially available biopesticides madex, azatin and helicovex against the four crop pests S. zeamais , Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius), Prostephanus truncates (Horn) and Trogodermagranarium (Everts) at doses ranging from 500 to 3000 ppm [ 105 ]. Examples of commercially available synthetic pesticides used in combination with plant-derived essential oils and their compounds are summarized in Table 1 .…”

“…Repellent effects of C. sativa leaf powder have been reported on S. oryzae by several authors (Khare et al, 1974;Prakash et al, 1982). Additionally, cannabidiol oil expressed insecticidal effects on adult S. zeamais and three other stored product pests [Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius), Prostephanus truncatus (Horn), and Trogoderma granarium Everts] in a recent study by Mantzoukas et al (2020). However, Cannabis treatment can also have positive effects on insects; and as presented by Park et al (2019), it significantly enhanced ethanol-intoxicated Manduca sexta (L.) larval survival by 40%.…”

“…Nevertheless, chemical mixtures, particularly those which combine EOs with low doses of chemical insecticides, are viewed as a promising strategy for insect resistance management (IRM) [12]. There are several studies that have evaluated mixtures of EOs and insecticides [44][45][46][47][48][49]. However, the current study represents the initial exploration of the impact of lemongrass EO combined with different pesticides on the metabolic enzymes in Bemisia tabaci adults.…”
