Combined soft and skeletal tissue modelling of normal and dysmorphic midface postnatal development

Abstract: Background Midface hypoplasia as exemplified by Treacher Collins Syndrome (TCS) can impair appearance and function. Reconstruction involves multiple invasive surgeries with variable long-term outcomes. This study aims to describe normal and dysmorphic midface postnatal development through combined modelling of skeletal and soft tissues and to develop a surgical evaluation tool. Materials and methods Midface skeletal and soft tissue surfaces were extracted from computed tomography scans of 52 control and 14 T… Show more

“…Facial maturity in our model was defined conservatively at 28–30 weeks of age 41 . Morphometric analysis has previously been used to describe patterns of growth, shape and development in unaffected and dysmorphic faces in syndromic human pediatric populations 42,43 . Application of this to animal study provided a means to concurrently analyze size and form of developing rabbit skulls.…”

“…The setup to calibrate the neuronavigation space employs eight pairs of anatomical points (i.e., points from the physical head and its correspondence on the rendered scanned volume) that must be provided manually. In this study, we used the inion, right outer corner of eye, nasion, preauricular left, preauricular right, glabella, left alar, and right alar as the anatomical references ( Sforza and Ferrario, 2006 ; Ibrahim et al, 2016 ). The depthmap-based picking algorithm was implemented to afford 3D interactions with rendered images ( Wu et al, 2003 , 2011 ).…”
