Combined Scale Removal and Scale Inhibition Treatments

Abstract: Calcium carbonate scale impacts oil production in a large number of fields worldwide. This scale is generally managed by acid washing to removal the scale and/or by performing scale inhibition treatments. The choice between inhibition and regular stimulation is cost driven, with high cost operations generally selecting inhibition. However, even in wells where inhibition is planned, some scale can be deposited either prior to scale inhibitor deployment, or after the end of the scale inhibition treatment life. C… Show more

“…These tests indicate that this material was absorbed more efficiently from HCl compared with being placed in KCl. This is consistent with testing performed by Smith, Clement Jr. et al (2000). Samy (2003) describes a case history that illustrates the concept of adding a scale inhibitor to a matrix stimulation treatment.…”

“…Organic acids are mainly utilized for removing scales in high-pressure high-temperature reservoirs. 39 41 The organic acids showed a low corrosive effect and provided chemical reactions for a long time; however, the solubility efficiency of organic acids is lower than that of HCl. 40 …”

“…Scale is mineral salt deposits or coating that precipitates and adheres to the surface of metal, rock, or other materials [11]. The precipitation is the result of different factors: a chemical reaction with the surface, a change of pressure or temperature, a change in the composition of a solution, or a combination of these factors [12].…”
