Combined SANS and SAXS study of the action of ultrasound on the structure of amorphous zirconia gels

Abstract: In the present work, we have studied for the first time the combined effect of both sonication and precipitation pH on the structure of amorphous zirconia gels synthesized from zirconium(IV) propoxide. The techniques of small-angle neutron and X-ray scattering (SANS and SAXS) and low temperature nitrogen adsorption provided the integral data on the changes in the microstructure and mesostructure of these materials caused by ultrasonic treatment.Amorphous ZrO 2 ·xH 2 O synthesized under ultrasonic treatment was… Show more

“…First of all, this manifests itself in an increase in the surface fractal dimension D S1 and characteristic size (upper self similarity boundary) R g1 of the particles of the first structural level. We note that in the precipita tion of hydrated zirconium and hafnium oxides an analogous increase in the surface fractal dimension was observed in [44][45][46]. In addition, the degree of aggregation grows for mass fractal clusters D m2 and aggregates D m3 of the second and third structural lev els, respectively.…”

“…No appreciable difference could be seen between the structure of sonogels and xerogels. In general, sonication applied during synthesis does not affect the size of monomer particles but may influence their secondary aggregation [36,37,39]. In the present materials, the SANS data did not reveal any influence of ultrasonication on the level of the primary particle formation, while the presence of ionic liquid appears to slow down the polycondensation reaction thus leading to increase of the primary particle size.…”

“…Interparticle interference effects are not included in this model, as in the given q-range there is no visible decrease or increase of the scattering intensity toward low q values. It is known that at a larger magnification, (that is at lower q) the fractal like assembly of the primary particles would be seen [36,37]. Data fitting was performed by the NCNR reduction and analysis package written for the Wavemetrics Igor Pro software [38].…”

“…Nano-cauliflower shapes of 1 were obtained by applying ultrasound to a methanolic solution containing the reagents, and single-crystalline materials were obtained by applying a heat gradient (the branched tube method [36]). There are very few reports on the synthesis of nano, cauliflower-shape compounds [52][53][54].…”
