Combined Osmotic and Membrane Distillation for Concentration of Anthocyanin from Muscadine Pomace

Abstract: Bioactive anthocyanins from aqueous extracts of muscadine grape pomace were concentrated using osmotic distillation (OD) and direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) using polypropylene (PP) and poly(ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene) (ECTFE) membranes. The driving force for OD is created by using a high concentration brine solution while the driving force for DCMD is generated by elevating the feed temperature relative to the permeate temperature. The brine concentration used was 4 M. The lowest fluxes were… Show more

“…As for the ECTFE, the fluorine content can be up to about 40%, which contributes to its good hydrophobicity and is even better than PVDF. There are some studies about the MD application of ECTFE membranes indicating good anti-wetting for desalination [16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24]. Moreover, ECTFE has excellent chemical corrosion resistance against acid, alkali, oxidant, and reducing and corrosive agents.…”

“…At the same time, the feed temperature was also elevated to 40°C. The anthocyanins can be concentrated up to threefold, however, the adsorption of anthocyanins on the membrane surface posed another challenge that needs to be resolved for optimized operation [60].…”

“…As a result, the top three protein-ligand complexes, namely RdRp-cyanidin 3-O-rutinoside (−107.68 kcal/mol), RdRp-petunidin 3,5-O-diglucoside (−99.18 kcal/mol), and RdRp-delphinidin 3-O-rutinoside (−90.70 kcal/mol), have better estimated binding energies (Table 1). These three polyphenols belong to the group of anthocyanins [43][44][45]. Meanwhile, we selected four compoundsremdesivir-TP (−55.00 kcal/mol), theaflavin 3,3 -digallate (TF3) (−77.89 kcal/mol), swertiapuniside (−39.42 kcal/mol), and ATP (−57.83 kcal/mol)-as a control group.…”
