Combined nitrogen and drought stress leads to overlapping and unique proteomic responses in potato

Abstract: Main conclusion Nitrogen deficient and drought-tolerant or sensitive potatoes differ in proteomic responses under combined (NWD) and individual stresses. The sensitive genotype ‘Kiebitz’ exhibits a higher abundance of proteases under NWD. Abstract Abiotic stresses such as N deficiency and drought affect the yield of Solanum tuberosum L. tremendously. Therefore, it is of importance to improve potato genotypes in terms of stress tolerance. In this st… Show more

“…Therefore, exogenous SA can improve the intracellular environment and maintain the balance of the osmotic system to a certain extent, and the OPLS–VIP results indicated that alterations in the Sp content had a significant impact on the ground diameter, plant height, and leaves ( Figure 7 ). Sp stores and releases nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, to maintain normal plant growth and development [ 34 ], and it plays an important role in plant responses to environmental stress. It was found in this study that drought stress caused insufficient water to reach the root system of the T. ciliata seedlings and decreased their nitrogen uptake capacity.…”

“…Target identification of plant responses to stress combinations is an effective means of enhancing plant tolerance; however, research in this area remains limited and requires more in-depth studies and further validation. Using varieties with different sensitivities to stress combinations, exploring possible mechanisms, and breeding varieties with enhanced tolerance to stress combinations may be an effective strategy [ 22 , 97 ].…”

“…Thus, amino acid metabolism plays a preponderant role in the metabolic acclimation of plants to drought and other stress conditions [22,32]. Indeed, N deficiency seems to decrease plant sensitivity to drought while maintaining the regulation of amino acid metabolism in different plants [33][34][35][36]. Thus, the modulation of amino acid metabolism through low-N conditions could significantly modify the metabolic acclimation of WOSR to drought.…”
