Combined nitrification-denitrification processes

Abstract: Nitrification and denitrification have traditionally been regarded as essentially separate phenomena, carried out by different bacteria in segregated areas of soil, sediments, water or reactors. However, research in the 1980s and 1990s has established that nitrifiers and denitrifiers are not as metabolically fastidious as previously thought, and strict segregation is not necessary. Moreover, some bacteria are able to convert NH~ and other reduced nitrogen compounds to nitrogen gas and the gaseous nitrogen oxid… Show more

“…Although nitrification and denitrification reactions are often represented by rather simple equations, it is recognized that they may be more complex and may involve the formation of various intermediates Jetten et al, 1997;Kuenen & Robertson, 1994). The use of 15N-labelled compounds in combination with mass spectrometry can help to elucidate Previous experiments using 15N-labelled ammonium and 14N0, in an Anammox pilot plant reactor resulted in the production of 14-15N2 (van de Graaf et al, 1995).…”

“…It is thought that these bacteria could oxidize as much ammonia as the chemolithotrophic ammonia-oxidizers provided that enough organic carbon is available for energy production (Kuenen & Robertson 1994). Additionally, many heterotrophic nitrifiers reduce NO − 2 to N 2 O under microaerophilic conditions using standard denitrifying enzymes (Table 3) (Castignetti et al 1984).…”
