Combined Methodology for Accurate Evaluation of Distance and Direction of Chromaticity Shifts in LED Reliability Tests

Abstract: Light Emitting Diodes are an integral part of modern illumination systems. While their long-term stability in terms of lumen maintenance used to be in the focus leading to drastically increased nominal lifetimes over the past decade, the color shift or respectively chromaticity shift is lately attracting more and more attention especially in lighting applications that demand for a high chromatic stability. Common ways of displaying and reporting color shifts in LEDs and LED products provide only limited possib… Show more

“…For the intuitive analysis of ageing processes, a representation of the color coordinates over time as illustrated in Figure 11 is useful [65]. The color coordinates are depicted in CIE 1976 u ′ v ′ color space, where the results of the different reconstruction methods, demarcated by color and marker type, are compared to the spectrometer measurements.…”

“…Using a superposition of probability density functions (pdf) S n (λ) = f pdf (x = λ) is a commonly used approach. Each separated SPD can then be further analyzed for example regarding its chromaticity shift and direction to identify underlying degradation mechanisms [2] .Real world SPD, however, exhibit pdf shapes with a certain skew. This either produces inaccuracies for a low number S n (λ) or resulting in an impractical high number of pdfs to ensure a certain accuracy.…”
