Combined light- and electron-microscopic study of the rat saphenous nerve

Abstract: Using light- and electron-microscopic techniques, a quantitative histological study of the rat saphenous nerve has been carried out. The distribution of myelinated fibre diameters was bimodal; while that of the unmyelinated axons was unimodal. The variation of myelin sheath thickness with axon diameter was non-linear; two straight lines were found to fit the data best. The variation of g (axon diameter/total fibre diameter) with total fibre diameter was also nonlinear, being best fitted by two lines – one stra… Show more

“…Information on the size of fascicles of the saphenous nerve is not available in the literature, either for humans or for experimental animals. Despite that the number of myelinated fibers was described by Alpsan andLal (1980), Lynn (1984) and Carter and Lisney (1987), with similar values of the present study (Table 1), no information on the myelinated fiber density is yet described. In experimental studies, usually a small endoneural area is morphometrically investigated (Jakobsen and Lundbaek, 1976;Unger et al, 1998;Kovacic et al, 2003).…”

“…The only information available on the myelinated fiber distribution is that described by Alpsan and Lal (1980). These authors described a bimodal distribution, with peaks at 4.0 and 6.5 m in diameter.…”
