Combined inhibitory effect of lactoferrin and lactoperoxidase system on the viability of Streptococcus mutans, serotype c

Abstract: Abstract— We have studied the effects of iron‐free lactoferrin (apo LF) and lactoperoxidase system (lactoperoxidase, LP/SCN‐/H2O2), separately and together, on the viability of Streptococcus mutans (serotype c) in vitro. The bacteria were incubated in buffered KCl (pH 5.5) with and without the above components which were used at concentrations normally present in human saliva. Both apo LF and LP‐system had a bactericidal effect against S. mutans at low pH. Together they showed an additive, but not a synergisti… Show more

“…However, antagonistic interactions between IgA and lactoferrin have been reported by Cole et al (1976) and Arnold et al (1984). Elevated antibacterial activity has been reported for combinations of lactoferrin and the peroxidase system (Tenovuo et al, 1982a;Moldoveanu et al, 1983;Soukka et al, 1991). Similar synergistic interactions between the peroxidase system and LZ have also been demonstrated (Goodman et al, 1981;Arnold et al, 1984).…”

“…Consumption of yoghurt might reduce biofilm formation on indwelling prostheses, due to the presence of Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus (Busscher et al, 1997b;Havenaar & Huis in't Veld, 1992). Buttermilk is rich in lactoferrin, which has bactericidal and fungicidal activity against a number of oral pathogenic organisms, including C. albicans, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Streptococcus mutans (Holmes et al, 2012;Kalmar & Arnold, 1988;Soukka et al, 1991Soukka et al, , 1992. This may explain the relatively prolonged lifetime of the prostheses and the varied microbial colonization in this study.…”
