Rapid urban expansion has significantly altered the regional landscape pattern, posing a serious threat to the sustainable development of natural and social ecosystems. By using landscape patterns indices and an area transfer matrix, this study analyzed the spatial-temporal changes of landscape patterns in the karst mountainous cities of southwest China from 2000 to 2020, by taking the central urban area of Guiyang City (CUAG) as the study area. This study explored the spatial and temporal driving factors of landscape pattern changes by using stepwise multiple linear regression and geographic detector methods. The results show: (1) CUAG’s landscape types altered changed drastically, with the area of forestland and construction land rapid increment and cultivated land decrement significantly. (2) The patches of construction land and forestland tended to be aggregated, the degree of fragmentation was reduced, and the shape was complex; cultivated land fragmentation was intensified. The connectivity of the landscape was improved, while the level of landscape diversity declined, the trend of landscape homogenization was obvious. (3) Socioeconomic and geographical endowment drivers have determined landscape pattern changes. The findings of this study may be used to interpret other similar landscapes worldwide and may imply the protection of urban ecosystem and sustainable development.

The dynamics of urban construction land in terms of scale and structural changes constitute the foundational pillars of research in territorial spatial development and planning. However, prior investigations have predominantly fixated on the patterns and models of horizontal expansion within urban construction land, paying comparatively scant attention to the regulatory patterns and impacts concerning the three-dimensional gradient of construction land "ascension.". Therefore, this study, based on high-precision land change survey data, elevation data, and administrative district data from 2010 to 2020, employs methodologies including construction land slope analysis, intensity analysis framework, LISA temporal pathways, spatiotemporal transitions, and the PLUS model. From the perspectives of both two-dimensional and three-dimensional expansion of construction land, the research delves deeply into the intensive analysis of the spatial growth process and driving factors of construction land in the central urban area of Chongqing, which experienced the most drastic expansion in urban construction land in China. The research findings indicate the following: (1) From the perspective of vertical expansion of construction land, in the central urban area of Chongqing, from 2010 to 2012, there was a gradual expansion of construction land into lower-slope areas, whereas from 2012 to 2020, it gradually extended into higher-slope regions. Furthermore, the intensity of construction land ascent significantly heightened after 2012, reaching its pinnacle between 2014 and 2016.(2) During the period from 2010 to 2020, there was a systematic inclination towards the transformation of arable land into construction land. Conversely, grassland to construction land, forestland to construction land, water bodies to construction land, and other land types to construction land exhibited tendencies of both absolute and relative shifts away from construction land. Additionally, there was a systematic tendency observed in the conversion from construction land to arable land. In contrast, the transformation from construction land to grassland, forestland, water bodies, and other land types exhibited a systematic inhibitory pattern.(3) Since 2010, there has been a steady increase in construction land expansion intensity in the central urban area of Chongqing. This progression has evolved from slow and balanced growth to rapid and uneven growth, leading to a gradual expansion of spatial disparities. The intensity changes in expansion across various townships exhibit spatial alternation. High-intensity areas are gradually converging towards the eastern part of Jiangbei District, the southern part of Yubei District, and Shapingba District, while low-intensity areas are concentrated in Beibei District and Baxian District.(4)In the central urban area of Chongqing, the majority of regions remain in a relatively stable spatial state, without undergoing noticeable leaps or transitions. This highlights a spatial locking characteristic in the intensity of construction land expansion.(5) The expansion of construction land in the central urban area of Chongqing is significantly influenced by factors such as topography, rivers, tunnels, and rail transportation, among others. The research findings can serve as a scientific foundation and decision-making reference for the rational planning of similar mountainous cities spanning riverbanks.

Valuable trees are frequently taken from their original habitat and introduced to a different location in the pursuit of better economic development. Global climate change imposes a higher probability of warm spells during chilly seasons; these may increase the threat posed by frost to newly introduced, valuable species. In this study, Dalbergia odorifera was cultured as a valuable tree species that was introduced from an original provenance in Sanya (1° N) to the northern mountains in Pingxiang (22° N), Guangzhou (23° N), Zhangpu (24° N), Xianyou (25° N), and up to the northernmost limit in Wenzhou (28° N). Seedlings of these six provenances were tested in a field study conducted in Wenzhou (control) to examine their resistance to local frost stress and to detect the driving forces related to meteorological factors in the winter–spring period of 2015–2016. The leaves sampled over seven days exhibited the typical characteristics of frost impairment. The daily maximum temperature delivered warm spells, increasing by ~7 °C. The daily minimum temperature (−4.3 to −2.0 °C) did not reach freezing point until the early spring of 2016. The controlled seedlings showed lower malondialdehyde content than those from the southern locations, and no mortality occurred. Invisible frost stress was caused by low nitrogen utilization during the earlier stages during warm spells, as well as damage to membrane integrity during the later stage when the minimum temperature suddenly declined. A warm spell was found to impose a negative driving force five days before a sudden chill, which led to frost having an impact on superoxide accumulation and electrical leakage. We conclude that the D. odorifera seedlings that dwell effectively in Wenzhou obtained stronger resistance to local frost stress than those from the southern locations. Low cell membrane integrity and high electrical leakage in leaf cells accounted for the frost damage.
