Water stress, resulting from a demand for water exceeding the available quantity, is a major global challenge. Groundwater usage is a commonly adopted strategy to address this situation, but it often leads to marine intrusion, threatening the quality of water in coastal aquifers. This phenomenon typically stems from overexploitation of aquifers, declining water table levels, and rising sea levels due to climate change. Our study aims to monitor the quality of groundwater intended for human consumption and provide a detailed assessment of its current state. We identified several physicochemical parameters, such as temperature, pH, and bicarbonates, with maximum electrical conductivity values reaching 2810 µs/cm, a total hardness of 21 meq/L, sulfate levels of 689 mg/L, and chloride levels of 628 mg/L, from six boreholes and one well located along the coastal area of the Al Hoceima region. These samples were also subjected to Principal component analysis (PCA) of the chemical parameters, revealing two factors that represent approximately 62.15% of the total variance in the groundwater quality dataset. Simulation results indicate signs of seawater intrusion in several areas, particularly near the coast, emphasizing the urgency of protecting groundwater resources and developing sustainable management strategies to ensure a safe and reliable supply of drinking water in the region.

The spatial distribution of water is mainly controlled by the vegetation canopy, which determines the partitioning of rainfall into interception, throughfall (TF) and stemflow. TF is known to be a critical component of hydrological and biogeochemical cycles. Spatiotemporal patterns of TF have been studied in different ecosystems, although the majority of studies focused on forests. Few reports on small‐scale TF variability and drivers in semi‐arid desert steppes have been published. Herein, we investigated the variability of TF of two morphologically distinct artificial revegetation shrubs (Caragana liouana and Salix psammophila) within a semi‐arid desert steppe, synthesized the data and analysed the characteristics of TF distribution and drivers at the rainfall event scales. We found that (1) morphological differences were sufficient to generate significant (p < 0.05) differences in TF between the two shrub species under the same rainfall and meteorological conditions, with a TF percentage of 70.22% for C. liouana and 79.87% for S. psammophila; (2) a linear outward radical increase in TF was identified with increasing distance from the base of the isolated shrubs. Wind speed had a greater effect on the distribution of TF beneath the shrub structure for C. liouana, whereas the distribution of TF beneath the shrub structure for S. psammophila was more affected by wind direction; and (3) canopy architecture, in particular the stem angle and canopy base area, which affected the openness of the canopy and played an important role in the distribution of TF in the two shrubs. The results reveal the key factors driving water use under rainfall during revegetation and the TF utilization mechanism in semi‐arid areas and highlight the complementary effect of different species on ecosystem hydrological functions.

The use of residual streams as feedstock for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) is growing steadily, as it allows the valorization of waste and nutrients otherwise disposed of and the potential production of a biodegradable bioplastic. To date, the environmental and economic costs associated with this process limit its scale-up, which is why it is important to identify possible solutions and optimize the costliest steps. With this in mind, a laboratory-scale sequenced batch reactor (SBR, 5 L) was constructed to allow the selection of a mixed microbial culture able to convert volatile fatty acids (VFAs) into PHA. The reactor is fed with synthetic water containing VFAs, ammonium, phosphate, and micronutrients, typical compounds of fermented streams of certain wastes, such as cheese whey, food waste, or wastewater sludge. The biomass selected and produced by this first reactor is sent to an accumulation reactor, which is fed with a solution rich in VFAs, allowing the accumulation of PHAs. The role of aeration and its impacts on the main process parameters were analyzed. Three scenarios corresponding to different aeration rates were analyzed: 0.08, 0.16, and 0.32 vvm. The SBR was operated at an organic load rate of 600 mgCOD L−1d−1, under a dynamic feeding regime (feast–famine) and a short hydraulic retention time (HRT; 1 day). The results obtained showed that a value of 0.32 enabled better selection and better settling of the sludge. Furthermore, a potential correlation between aeration rate and VFA and NH4+ consumption rates was identified. The resulting biomass was able to accumulate up to 0.15 ± 0.02 g PHAgVSS−1.
