Combined aniridic intraocular lens implantation and vitreoretinal surgery

Abstract: A 45-year-old man presented with post-traumatic aniridia. We describe the combined surgery done to treat both aniridia and epiretinal membrane simultaneously. A combined aniridia intraocular lens and vitreoretinal surgery was done. The case report highlights the advantage of combined surgery in terms of cost factor and surgical time.

“…The combined repair of RD and aniridia after GR offers the advantage of addressing all issues at one time in an effort to restore anatomy and minimize the risk of keratopathy [5]. Separation between the posterior and the vitreous chamber, in fact, not only is a pre-requisite for tamponade confinement and corneal preservation but restores the volume and geometry of the vitreous chamber, producing a more effective tamponade due to better retinal contact.…”

“…In addition to the traumatic cases, in which combined measures with cataract extraction and iris replacement may be indicated by the underlying condition, there are two reports of such interventions combined with vitreoretinal surgery [28,29], and one with keratoplasty [30], all in trauma induced (partial) aniridia. Results and complications are within what is described for noncombined cases.…”
