The reactions γp → ηp and γp → η 0 p are measured from their thresholds up to the center-of-mass energy W ¼ 1.96 GeV with the tagged-photon facilities at the Mainz Microtron, MAMI. Differential cross sections are obtained with unprecedented statistical accuracy, providing fine energy binning and full production-angle coverage. A strong cusp is observed in the total cross section for η photoproduction at the energies in the vicinity of the η 0 threshold, W ¼ 1896 MeV (E γ ¼ 1447 MeV). Within the framework of a revised ηMAID isobar model, the cusp, in connection with a steep rise of the η 0 total cross section from its threshold, can only be explained by a strong coupling of the poorly known Nð1895Þ1=2 − state to both ηp and η 0 p. Including the new high-accuracy results in the ηMAID fit to available η and η 0 photoproduction data allows the determination of the Nð1895Þ1=2 − properties.

An exact expression is derived for the meson production current off the nucleon for real and virtual photons which cleanly separates, in a model-independent manner, a tree-level expression that manifestly preserves local gauge invariance in terms of a generalized Ward-Takahashi identity from transverse final-state-interaction (FSI) terms. As discussed in some detail, this exact formulation is particularly well suited for implementing approximation schemes of exchange-current and FSI contributions (which in practice generally will be necessary) at any level of sophistication without violating local gauge invariance.

We evaluate the cross section for the pp → pp f 1 (1285) and p p → p p f 1 (1285) reactions at near threshold energies relevant for the HADES and PANDA experiments at GSI-FAIR. We assume that at energies close to the threshold the ωω → f 1 (1285) and ρ 0 ρ 0 → f 1 (1285) fusion processes are the dominant production mechanisms. The vertex for the VV → f 1 coupling is derived from an effective coupling Lagrangian. The g ρρ f 1 coupling constant is extracted from the decay rate of f 1 (1285) → ρ 0 γ using the vector-meson-dominance ansatz. We assume g ωω f 1 = g ρρ f 1 , equality of these two coupling constants, based on arguments from the naive quark model and vectormeson dominance. The amplitude for the VV → f 1 fusion, supplemented by phenomenological vertex form factors for the process, is given. The differential cross sections at energies close to the threshold are calculated. In order to determine the parameters of the model the γp → f 1 (1285)p reaction is discussed in addition and results are compared with the CLAS data. The possibility of a measurement by HADES@GSI is presented and discussed. We performed a Monte Carlo feasibility simulations of the pp → pp f 1 reaction for √ s = 3.46 GeV in the π + π − π + π − (not shown explicitly) and π + π − π + π − π 0 final states using the PLUTO generator. The latter one is especially promising as a peak in the π + π − η should be observable by HADES.
