“…Note that the sample had only four users of disposable devices with a freebase liquid, seven users of disposable pod/cartridge devices with a freebase liquid, and 26 users of a tank device with a nicotine salt. As previously reported in the literature, ( Cohen et al, 2022 ) these device-liquid groupings were uncommon among U.S. adult frequent ENDS users in 2020. Thus, linear regression was not conducted with these strata.…”

“…Although disposables were not the most frequently used device by younger people, a higher proportion of younger people use them relative to older people, and older respondents had a higher proportion using tank devices in all three countries, which is consistent with other studies ( CDC, 2022 , Hammond et al, 2022 , Tattan-Birch et al, 2022 , Wang et al, 2020a , Wang et al, 2020b ). Our findings are in line with other studies, which have consistently shown that adults commonly use tank systems ( Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), 2021 , Cohen et al, 2022 , Felicione et al, 2022 , Gravely et al, 2022b , Yingst et al, 2019 ); however, we found a similar proportion of respondents reported using cartridge/pod devices most often. This latter finding differed from a previous ITC 4CV study using 2018 data, where the majority of adults who were vaping used tanks and far fewer used cartridges ( Felicione et al, 2022 ).…”

“…In 2021, 4.5 % of adults in the U.S. currently use electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) ( QuickStats, 2021 ). The ENDS market is changing rapidly and is highly heterogeneous with a wide variety of devices and liquids available to consumers ( Cohen et al, 2022 , O’Connor et al, 2022 ). Examining ENDS device and liquid together can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the chosen and used products.…”

“…Examining ENDS device and liquid together can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the chosen and used products. The most prevalent combination reported by more than one-third (36.2 %) of adults frequently using ENDS in 2020 was tank devices with adjustable settings and a freebase nicotine liquid, followed by disposable pods with non-adjustable settings and a nicotine salt liquid (22.8 %), refillable pods with adjustable settings and a nicotine salt liquid (12.6 %), refillable pods with adjustable settings and a freebase liquid (8.1 %), and disposable devices with non-adjustable settings and a nicotine salt liquid (7.1 %) ( Cohen et al, 2022 ). Since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a policy prioritizing enforcement against all flavors except menthol and tobacco from disposable pods such as JUUL in 2020 ( U.S. FDA, 2020 ), there has been a decline in the use of disposable pods and a continuous increase in the use of disposable devices such as Elf Bar through the beginning of 2023 ( Nian et al, 2023 , Foundation and Monitoring, 2023 ).…”
