Combination therapy in combating cancer

Abstract: Combination therapy, a treatment modality that combines two or more therapeutic agents, is a cornerstone of cancer therapy. The amalgamation of anti-cancer drugs enhances efficacy compared to the mono-therapy approach because it targets key pathways in a characteristically synergistic or an additive manner. This approach potentially reduces drug resistance, while simultaneously providing therapeutic anti-cancer benefits, such as reducing tumour growth and metastatic potential, arresting mitotically active cell… Show more

“…Drug combination studies evaluating the effect of interactions (synergism, additive, and antagonism) between chemotherapeutic drugs and/or natural compound have provided remarkable insights into new strategies for the development of combination therapy in recent years . However, drug combinations used in treatment should be carefully determined to minimize the evolution of cross‐resistance cells and the toxic effect of drugs …”

“…However, freezing cancer cells may also affect surrounding tissue and organ, hence new methods such as nanocryosurgery are being investigated to address this challenge. Combinational methods involving new and conventional chemical approaches have been used to deliver effective cancer treatments . Phytochemicals have been used to replace chemically derived anti‐cancer drugs to reduce side‐effects in combinational cancer therapy …”

“…Cancer treatment often involves combined modalities such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. In the past decades, more effective and targeted therapeutic modalities and less destructive cancer treatments have been developed such as immunotherapy and drug‐targeted therapy . Even so, cancer and its treatment have important physical and psychosocial sequelae …”
