Combination Studies of Eucalyptus torelliana F. Muell. Leaf Extracts and Clarithromycin on Helicobacter pylori

Abstract: Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative bacillus that is associated with the development of gastritis and peptic ulcer disease (PUD). In Nigeria, leaf extracts of Eucalyptus torelliana F. Muell. are used in traditional medicine to treat PUD and other gastrointestinal ailments. The additive and synergistic effects of E. torelliana leaf extracts, in combination with clarithromycin, were investigated using two types of H. pylori strains (ATCC 43629, ATCC 43579) and four clinical isolates of H. pylori (Ed, A2, G1-1… Show more

“…In vitro anti-H. pylori activity was observed when the Terminalia macroptera root was used and also for Eucalyptus tolleria leaf extract (when used with clarithromycin) [53,54]. Interestingly, in drug-resistant strains, Combretum molle and Sclerocarya birrea were shown to be potentially effective in vitro [55,56]. The sap of the lacquer tree (Rhus verniciflua Stokes) was illustrated to have anti-H. pylori activity in a mouse model [57].…”

“…However, the precise mechanisms through which formulae function are poorly understood and, thus hampering the modernization of TCM, must be addressed using chemical fingerprinting coupled with systems biology. Recently, some researchers have made good attempts in this explanation using some approaches to identify the combinational roles of multi-component therapeutics from herb medicines (Du et al, 2013;Lawal et al, 2012;Zhou et al, 2012aZhou et al, , 2012b.…”
