Combination of sunlight, oxidants, and Ce-doped TiO2 for phenol degradation

Abstract: The degradation of phenol was used as a model reaction to investigate the photocatalytic properties of cerium-doped (0.1 nominal atomic percent) TiO catalysts in the presence and in the absence of oxidants: persulfate (PS) or hydrogen peroxide (HP). Experiments were performed in batch reactors using either artificial light (ultraviolet or visible) or solar exposure during spring-summer seasons in La Plata City (34.90° S, 57.92° W, 15 MASL). The formation of hydroquinone, catechol, and p-benzoquinone was observ… Show more

“…Rayonet photochemical reactor RPR-100 (Southern New England Ultraviolet Company) with ultraviolet (UV) or visible (VIS) lamps was used. The lamp spectra were determined in a previous work, showing emission maxima of UV and VIS lamps at 365 and 577 nm, respectively (Martin et al 2017). Sampling was performed periodically.…”

“…For the treatment of a given wastewater stream, primary parameters that may affect the performance of a SPR include construction material, lamps, catalyst film characteristics, “angle” and “depth” of the slant plates, radiation intensity, temperature, and flow rate through the reactor 18 . For the SPR system, we used the exact temperature of 25°C and focused on investigating the effects of flow rate and light intensity on SPR performance.…”

“…Previously, we studied the enhancement of TiO 2 photocatalysis by cerium doping for phenol degradation [24,22]. Although we reached good values for phenol degradation, the photocatalytic experiments were performed in ultrapure water.…”

“…A Rayonet RPR-100 model photochemical reactor purchased from Southern New England Ultraviolet Company, with eight UV lamps (with maximum at 365 nm) or Vis lamps (with maximum at 575 nm), was used. The lamp-spectrum and irradiation pattern in/inside the reactor were previously reported [22]. Spectral irradiance employed in the experiments was measured with a high-resolution Avantes spectrometer (AvaSpec-ULS3648 model).…”
