Combination of Intravitreal Bevacizumab and Topical Dorzolamide versus Intravitreal Bevacizumab Alone for Diabetic Macular Edema: A Randomized Contralateral Clinical Trial

Abstract: Purpose. To evaluate the efficacy of three intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) injections versus the same combined with 2% of topical dorzolamide in the treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME). Methods. In this randomized double-masked clinical trial, 32 eyes of 16 treatment-naive patients with bilateral DME were enrolled. The eyes were randomly assigned to receive three monthly injections of IVB (1.25 mg) plus topical dorzolamide 2% twice daily or IVB (1.25 mg) plus topical artificial tear twice daily. “…In our study there was no significant variation among studied group in IOP reduction (p = 0.302), a similar finding by Fazel et al. 11 Also, Hsu et al found more reduction of IOP in the dorzolamide-timolol group in comparison with placebo, but variation was not statistically significant (P =0.24). 9 In contrary to Mirshahi et al who found that IOP was decreased in eyes that received timolol-dorzolamide, not in eyes that received IVB alone.…”

“…Badawi et al suggested that topical dorzolamide without IVB injection can be effective in CMT reduction and BCVA improvement (11). Three other studies have investigated the e cacy of topical aqueous suppressants combined with intravitreal anti-VEGF injection in treating DME (12,13,18). In line with our results, Fazel et al showed that the adjuvant administration of topical dorzolamide was ineffective in improving the therapeutic effects of IVB injection (12).…”

In line with our results, Fazel et al showed that the adjuvant administration of topical dorzolamide was ineffective in improving the therapeutic effects of IVB injection (12).
