Combination of fenofibrate plus low-dose nicotinic acid added to statin treatment in type 2 diabetes: An open-label, crossover study

Abstract: Treatment with the 3-drug regimen was associated with a significant reduction in triglyceride levels compared with simvastatin monotherapy. However, there was not a significant incremental reduction in triglyceride levels when nicotinic acid was added to the 2-drug treatment, suggesting that the triglyceride-lowering effect of fenofibrate + nicotinic acid is not cumulative. To obtain clinically meaningful responses, particularly for the treatment of elevated HDL-C, higher doses of nicotinic acid might be requi… Show more

“…Triple combination therapy with fenofibrate, simvastatin and niacin causes significantly lower plasma triglycerides and higher HDL‐cholesterol than each of this drugs alone [83]. However, there is no additional reduction of triglycerides when nicotinic acid is added to fenofibrate/simvastatin combination thus suggesting that the triglyceride‐lowering effect of fenofibrate and niacin is not cumulative.…”
