Combination of Cysteine and Glutathione Prevents Ethanol-Induced Hangover and Liver Damage by Modulation of Nrf2 Signaling in HepG2 Cells and Mice

Hyeongyeong Kim,
Hyung Joo Suh,
Ki-Bae Hong
et al.

Abstract: Excessive alcohol consumption increases oxidative stress, leading to alcoholic liver disease. In this study, the protective effects of a mixture of cysteine and glutathione against ethanol-induced hangover and liver damage were evaluated in mice and HepG2 cells. Ethanol (2 mL/kg) was orally administered to the mice 30 min before receiving the test compounds (200 mg/kg), and the behavioral and oxidative stress-related biochemical parameters altered by ethanol were analyzed. Acute ethanol administration increase… Show more

“…To simulate the maternal environment in vitro, antioxidant drugs are added to the culture medium to reduce or eliminate the embryo blocks caused by environmental stressors. Melatonin (Choi et al, 2024;Lavrentiadou et al, 2023), vitamins (Georgiev et al, 2023;Widgerow et al, 2023), cysteines (Kim et al, 2023), and quercetin (Shi et al, 2023;Zhou et al, 2023) are examples of natural antioxidant substances that have been used in this context. Thus, the identification of novel natural antioxidant drugs is crucial for improving embryonic development and assisted reproductive technologies.…”
