Abstract. Current data are inconsistent regarding the association between interleukin-6 (IL-6), a marker of acute phase inflammation, and pelvic endometriosis. The aim of the present study was to assess IL-6 levels in serum and peritoneal fluid (PF), as well as IL-6 gene expression in adipose tissue (AT) and endometrial samples in pelvic endometriosis. A total of 30 patients with endometriosis and 18 women with a normal pelvis were enrolled in this case-control study. IL-6 levels in PF and serum were determined using a human enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and IL-6 gene expression was evaluated using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. It was observed that IL-6 levels in the PF were higher in patients with endometriosis than in the control group (P=0.047) and patients with stage III/IV endometriosis exhibited higher IL-6 levels in the PF than those with stage I/II endometriosis and the control group (P<0.001). Furthermore, a strong correlation between PF IL-6 levels and the revised American Society for Reproductive Medicine score for endometriosis severity was identified (r=0.77; P<0.001). IL-6 gene expression did not differ significantly between endometriosis and control groups in endometrial samples or in AT of both groups. The results of the current study suggest that there may be an association between IL-6 and the presence and severity of pelvic endometriosis. The source of this higher IL-6 seems not to be specifically related to regional AT.

Objective: To compare the clinical efficacy of Cassia Twig Tuckahoe capsule (Chinese Medicine) and Mifepristone combined with laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of endometriosis. Designs: Prospective cohort study. Setting: Gynecology and Obstetrics Department, Jingzhou Central Hospital, affiliated to Yangtze University. Methods: We selected 67 patients suspected with endometriosis and divided randomly into 2 groups on patient choice. Outcome Measures: Treatment efficacy, side effects, recurrence rate and pregnancy rate. Results: Comparing the effect of treatment between the two groups, the success rate was almost same (P > 0.5). However, the disappearance of pain was faster in Cassia twig Tuckahoe group (P < 0.05). One patient in mifepristone group had recurrent endometriosis after 8 months from initial treatment. Comparing the side effects between the two groups, Cassia twig Tuckahoe capsule group has fewer side effects in comparison to mifepristone group. The pregnancy rate was 72% in Cassia twig Tuckahoe group while 40% in mifepristone group. Conclusion: After analysis of the result, Cassia twig Tuckahoe capsule combined with Laparoscopy is superior to the Mifepristone combined with Laparoscopy. Cassia twig Tuckahoe capsule is a very propitious medicine for treating endometriosis for long term benefits.

Background/Aims: Endometriosis is an invasive disease. Its diagnosis depends on laparoscopy, which is traumatic and associated with potential complications. The aim of this study was to develop a rapid, reliable, and less invasive diagnostic test for endometriosis. We hypothesized that genes related to cell invasion would be transcriptionally upregulated in endometriosis, and tested whether blood levels of their transcripts might be used as biomarkers of endometriosis.Methods:We used quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) to quantify the mRNA levels of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA), matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3), and MMP-9 in peripheral blood from 20 patients with mild/intermediate endometriosis, 20 patients with severe endometriosis and 20 endometriosis-free subjects. Results:Our results indicate that circulating mRNA for MMP-3 is significantly higher in patients with endometriosis than in control patients, regardless of the degree of severity. Conversely, the level of circulating mRNA for VEGFA and MMP-9 did not distinguish patients from controls. Conclusion: MMP-3 mRNA is a promising peripheral blood marker that discriminates between patients with endometriosis and healthy subjects. Our results support the possibility of finding genes suitable for diagnostic qRT-PCR for endometriosis in peripheral blood and should be explored further.
