Colovesical Fistula Due to a Lost Gallstone Following Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: Report of a Case

Abstract: We report the case of a 74-year-old man with a colovesical fistula caused by a gallstone that was lost during a laparoscopic cholecystectomy 7 months earlier. The patient was cured after undergoing colonoscopic removal of the stone. To our knowledge this is the first case report of such a complication in the English literature. The report reviews the outcome and complications of retained intraperitoneal gallstones.

“…A case of a colovesical fistula being caused by a lost gallstone after laparoscopic cholecystectomy was also reported. 3 A history of pneumaturia (37%-90%) and fecaluria (19%-90%) is pathognomonic after exclusion of the rare occurrence of a urinary tract infection with gas-forming bacteria, as may occur with diabetes mellitus. 2,4,5 The incidence of fistulas in patients with diverticulitis ranges from 2% to 22% and is higher in men, probably because of the protective interpositioning of the uterus and adnexa in women.…”
