Colostrum - Its Composition, Benefits As A Nutraceutical : A Review

Abstract: Colostrumis ‘the first milk secreted at the time of parturition, differing from the milk secreted later, by containing more lactalbumin and lactoprotein, and also being rich in antibodies that confer passive immunity to the newborn, also called “foremilk”. Human Colostrum (HC) and Bovine Colostrum (BC) are rich in protein, immunoglobulin, lactoferrin and growth factors. Recent studies suggest that colostrum components, immunoglobulin and growth factor benefits physically active personandin treatment of autoimm… Show more

“…The findings of many researchers mentioned above show similarity with our findings. This can be explained by the following: colostrum is a nutritious liquid which is rich [2] and helps the growth of intestinal system [23] . Lipid peroxidation occurring through free oxygen radicals is a significant cause of injury to cell membranes.…”

“…Colostrum contains not only nutrients such as protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins and minerals, but also various bio-active components such as growth and antimicrobial factors [1,2] . Two of the most important components contained in colostrum are immune and growth factors [3,4] .…”

“…Beside valuable nutritional components, in colostrum composition are included growth (growth factors as epidermal, insulin like, etc., and growth hormone), immune (lactoferrin and immunoglobulins), and anti-inflammatory factors, with role in reparation of damaged cells, regulation of the immune response, or in reducing inflammatory disorders [7][8][9]. During the first days from birth, both human and mammal newborns must face a potential harmful environment, due to microbial threat [10].…”

“…For this reason, a preoccupation in the field of replacing human colostrum with colostrum from other species is reflected by literature [7][8][9][12][13]. This is the appropriate context to mention the opportunity of using colostrum from donkeys as human colostrum replacer.…”
