Colorectal cancer prevention in the Czech Republic

Abstract: The incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer (CRC) in the Czech Republic is significant. The National CRC Screening Program started in 2000 and was further enhanced in 2009. In 2010, the European Guidelines were introduced. The aim of the present trend study was to evaluate the quality of the Czech National Colorectal Cancer Screening Program using early performance and long-term impact indicators. “…Therefore, the lowest rates of test positivity in Europe were obtained in England and France, where screening was performed with the G-FOBT[42,44]. As mentioned, in the Czech Republic program, after the G-FOBT was replaced with the FIT, the PPV for advanced adenoma increased, and the PPV for CRC decreased[43]. This result implied that, compared to the G-FOBT, the FIT had a higher sensitivity and PPV for advanced adenomas, but a lower PPV for CRC.…”

“…In the case of FOBT positivity, colonoscopy is performed. From the age of 55, every individual has the choice of either continuing examinations by FOBT every two years or undergoing a screening colonoscopy, which can be repeated in individuals with negative findings after ten years[ 9 , 10 ]. In 2014, screening invitations addressed to the target population were introduced in the Czech Republic, effecting a transition from an opportunistic screening program to a population-based program.…”
