Coloration of Flowers by Flavonoids and Consequences of pH Dependent Absorption

Abstract: Flavonoid pigments are key determinants of flower colors. As absorption spectra of flavonoids are known to be severely pH-dependent, cellular pH will play a crucial role in flower coloration. The flavonoids are concentrated in the vacuoles of the flowers’ epidermal cells, and thus the pigments’ absorption spectra are modulated by the vacuolar pH. Here we study the pH dependence of flavonoid absorption spectra in extracts from flowers of two poppy species Papaver dubium (red) and Meconopsis cambrica (orange), a… Show more

“…Anyway, the anthocyanin sensitivity to pH associated with their prevalent localization in acidic vacuoles of epidermal cells affects their color depending on plant basal conditions and functional changes. These factors have been studied for their evolutionary sense and for their roles in plant adaptation to environmental stress or to attract pollinators [74,75]. Research on these compounds has been also devoted to overcome some color limitations in flowers with remarkable commercial value.…”

“…Therefore, carotenoids are considered part of the primary metabolism. In contrast, flavonoids are specialized plant metabolites that contribute to stress resilience and play important roles in the reproduction of many plants [8][9][10].…”

“…These are directly linked to the two aryl groups with a ketoethylenic group (Ph-CO-CH=CH-Ph). In naturally, these are known as flavonoids [2], which are important for the pigmentation of plant flowers [3]. Chalcones are prepared in the laboratory by the Claisen-Schmidt condensation method [4].…”
