Objective: To analyze the staining and color changes of a resin infiltrant system used for management of white spot lesions (WSLs). Materials and Methods: WSLs were artificially created on left buccal halves of 48 extracted human teeth. These sites were then treated with resin infiltration (RI) while the right halves of the teeth remained as nonresin (NRI) areas. Six groups were formed (n ¼ 8 teeth/group) and were exposed to the following: red wine, coffee, orange juice, combined staining agents, accelerated aging, and distilled water for 1 week. The teeth were then polished with a prophy cup and polishing paste. Color properties were assessed using a spectrophotometer at baseline (T0), after each exposure (T1), and after polishing (T2). Color difference (DE*) was calculated between each time point for both halves of the teeth (RI and NRI). Data were analyzed with a two-way analysis of variance with presence of resin infiltration and staining agents as the main effects for each time point pair. Multiple comparisons were made with a Bonferroni post hoc test. The level of significance was set at P , .05. Results: The red wine and combined staining agent groups caused the greatest color change between all intervals (P , .05). Significant interactions were recorded between resin infiltration application and staining agents at all time periods (P , .05). The presence of resin infiltration as a main effect did not affect color change between T0 and T2 (P . .05). Conclusions: RI areas showed higher staining susceptibility than did NRI areas. However, prophylaxis had a strong effect on reversing the discoloration of both RI and NRI areas. (Angle Orthod. 2016;86:900-904)

Purpose: To provide an overview of different indications suitable for treatment with the technique of resin infiltration (Icon, DMG), such as white-spot lesions (WSL), enamel fluorosis, and molar-incisor hypomineralisation (MIH), and to propose a valid and strategy feasible in dental surgeries for screening of dental color improvement and -stability. Method: A non-systematic review of the literature was performed to characterise inhibition of lesion progression, and the esthetic effects induced by resin infiltration of decalcified enamel, enamel fluorosis, and molar-incisor hypomineralisation (MIH), using the online database Pubmed and a suitable search strategy. Database search was complemented by a hand-search of references of retrieved articles. Results: Of 34 retrieved articles, 29 were included in the review. Evidence of an assimilation of WSL color to surrounding enamel following infiltration is available on the level of RCTs, and the results were found to be stable in color with no significant changes over at least twelve months. Evidence of an esthetic improvement of fluorotic or MIH affected teeth is available on the level of case reports and case control studies. Conclusion: As a micro-invasive approach to infiltrate and seal different types of enamel lesions, with a subsequent improvement of the esthetic appearance, resin infiltration is considered to be a useful complementation of the dental therapeutic specter.

Objective: This study evaluated the effect of food-simulating media associated with brushing and coffee staining on color stability of different composite resins. Materials and methods: Eighty specimens were prepared for each composite: Grandio SO (Voco), Amaris (Voco), Filtek Z350XT (3M/ESPE), Filtek P90 (3M/ESPE). They were divided into four groups according to food-simulating media for 7 days: artificial saliva (control), heptane, citric acid and ethanol. The composite surface was submitted to 10,950 brushing cycles (200 g load) in an automatic toothbrushing machine. The specimens were darkened with coffee solution at 37 °C for 24 h. After each treatment, color measurements were assessed by spectrophotometry, using CIE L*a*b* system. The overall color change (ΔE) was determined for each specimen at baseline (C1) and after the treatments (food-simulating media immersion/C2, brushing/C3 and dye solution/C4). Data were analyzed by two-way repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey’s tests (p < .05). Results: The results of RM-ANOVA showed significant differences for composites (p = .001), time (p = .001) and chemical degradation (p = .002). The mean of ΔE for composites were: Z350XT (5.39)a, Amaris (3.89)b, Grandio (3.75)bc, P90 (3.36)c. According to food-simulating media: heptane (4.41)a, citric acid (4.24)a, ethanol (4.02)ab, artificial saliva (3.76)b. For the treatments: dye solution (4.53)a, brushing (4.26)a, after food-simulating media (3.52)b. Conclusions: The composite resin Filtek Z350XT showed significantly higher staining than all other composite resin tested. The immersion in heptane and citric acid produced the highest color alteration than other food-simulating media. The exposure of samples to brushing protocols and darkening in coffee solution resulted in significant color alteration of the composite resins.
