Color stability of carious incipient lesions located in enamel and treated with resin infiltration or remineralization

Abstract: Lesions infiltrated with Icon(®) underwent greater color change when compared with remineralized lesions, which may represent an esthetic disadvantage for the first-mentioned treatment.

“…Although there are many studies in the literature which investigate the properties of the infiltrant, there is only one study which aims to evaluate the material at a nano‐scale using AFM . In addition, the previous studies which investigate the microhardness of Icon ® show differing results .…”

“…The implementation of a specific strategy depends on the severity of the lesion and its location. 4,[11][12][13][14] More recently, treating white spot lesions or incipient carious lesions using a resin infiltration technique has shown potential to both inhibit carious lesion progression and to dramatically improve the visual appearance of localized demineralized areas. 7,8,11,15,16 A commercially available, infiltrative resin (Icon, DMG, Hamburg, Germany) is said to penetrate into white spot lesions with positive masking effects and, without the invasiveness of a composite restoration.…”
