Color Image Enhancement Methods Based on Matlab

Abstract: The aim of the paper is to provide three enhancement methods for processing color images, including: RGB Histogram equalization, the method based on HSI and Multi-scale Retinex with color restoration (MSRCR). Firstly, we shall briefly introduce color image enhancement and related concept. Then, emphasis is placed on the principle of the three methods. Afterwards, we make comparison among the three methods. Finally, we can get a conclusion that: MSRCR greatly not only strengthens the details but also keep the c… Show more

“…The application of enhancement algorithms to an image improves the visual quality by targeting brightness, contrast, image resolution, edge sharpness and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) properties in matrix formats [41]. This enhancement then aids with the identification of features [42], such as the defects of interest in the thermography data.…”

“…Conventional HE methods are known to sometimes introduce undesirable artefacts after processing due to excessive brightness and contrast saturation shifts. To counter this, the adaptive histogram methods have been developed which processes over smaller regions of the image based on histogram specification [42]. Output contrasts are limited areas of homogenous intensity to avoid noise amplification in the image, maintaining clarified pixels in areas of interest.…”
