Accurate models of thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries require quantitative knowledge of heat release during thermochemical processes. A capability to predict at least some aspects of heat release for a wide variety of candidate materials a priori is desirable. This work establishes a framework for predicting staged heat release from basic thermodynamic properties for layered metal-oxide cathodes. Available enthalpies relevant to thermal decomposition of layered metal-oxide cathodes are reviewed and assembled in this work to predict potential heat release in the presence of alkyl-carbonate electrolytes with varying state of charge. Cathode delithiation leads to a less stable metal oxide subject to phase transformations including oxygen release when heated. We recommend reaction enthalpies and show the thermal consequences of metal-oxide phase changes and solvent oxidation within the battery are of comparable magnitudes. Heats of reaction are related in this work to typical observations reported in the literature for species characterization and calorimetry. The methods and assembled databases of formation and reaction enthalpies in this work lay groundwork a new generation of thermal runaway models based on fundamental material thermodynamics, capable of predicting accurate maximum cell temperatures and hence cascading cell-to-cell propagation rates.

Schlieren and shadowgraph techniques are used around the world for imaging and measuring phenomena in transparent media. These optical methods originated long ago in parallel with telescopes and microscopes, and although it might seem that little new could be expected of them on the timescale of 15 years, in fact several important things have happened that are reviewed here. The digital revolution has had a transformative effect, replacing clumsy photographic film methods with excellent-though expensive-high-speed video cameras, making digital correlation and processing of shadow and schlieren images routine, and providing an entirely-new synthetic schlieren technique that has attracted a lot of attention: background-oriented schlieren or BOS. Several aspects of modern schlieren and shadowgraphy depend upon laptop-scale computer processing of images using an imagecapable language such as MATLAB ™. BOS, shock-wave tracking, schlieren velocimetry, synthetic streak-schlieren, and straightforward quantitative density measurements in 2D flows are all recent developments empowered by this digital and computational capability.

Terowongan angin merupakan sebuah fasilitas yang mensimulasikan aliran udara dengan berbagai variasi kecepatan pada sebuah benda. Peneliti dan perekayasa menggunakan terowngan angin untuk mengamati dan mengevaluasi perilaku sebuah benda pada kecepatan udara tertentu. Terdapat 2 metode dalam proses pengamatan perilaku benda pada pengujian terowongan angin, yaitu dengan menggunakan balance dan visualisasi dengan menggunakan schlieren.
