Color Consciousness

Abstract: In the contemporary United States, race relations are considered a dynamic process and linked to political struggle. Color consciousness is a concept that helps us understand how groups are formed and maintained in society, highlighting collective cohesion in relation to the dominate power structures. As a political practice, color consciousness disrupts both the centrality and neutrality of whiteness in structural arrangements, giving racial groups more visibility and input.
