Colonoscopic Diagnosis of Appendiceal Intussusception : A Case Report

Abstract: Intussusception of the appendix is an uncommon condition and the diagnosis is rarely made preoperatively. Intussusception of the appendix may mimic a neoplastic lesion. Colonoscopy is a valuable tool for diagnosis of the appendiceal intussusception. A 17-yr-old female admitted with repeated abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and febrile sensation. We diagnosed as appendiceal intussusception by colonoscopy, which showed a polypoid tumor (about 1.5 cm) in the cecum. This sessile polypoid mass looks like foreskin o… Show more

“…5,6 Appendiceal intussusception has often been misdiagnosed as a caecal polyp in endoscopy when there is a neoplasm of appendix. 4 Pathologically intussusception of the appendix has the following characteristics: (a) Lesions inside the lumen like faecoliths, foreign bodies. (b) Lesions of the wall like hypertrophic lymphoid follicles, adenovirus infections, mucosal polyps, mucoceles, adenocarcinoma, carcinoid, endometriosis, tuberculosis, and mucinous cystadenoma.…”

“…Appendiceal intussusception can be observed during colonoscopy [1,6,9,13], where it may appear as a sessile or elongated polypoid mass [14]. It is important not to mistake it with a cecal polyp, which can lead to iatrogenic complications after endoscopic removal of such a ‘polyp' [9,10,15]. Even a simple biopsy of it can provoke bacterial infection [10].…”
