Colonoscopic and histologic features of colonic Crohn's disease in Chinese patients

Abstract: The colonic involvement of Crohn's disease was common. Colonoscopy may be valuable in establishing a diagnosis and in assessing the extent and severity of such colonic involvement. Biopsy is helpful to confirm a diagnosis conducted by colonoscopy. Colonoscopy combined with biopsy may replace radiology as the initial test of choice in many clinical situations.

“…In the clinic, Crohn's disease often involves transmural inflammation. Histological findings include small superficial ulcerations over Peyer's patches, as well as focal chronic inflammation extending to the submucosa, sometimes accompanied by non-caseating granuloma formation[29], [30]. In our experiments, beauvericin administration inhibited inflammatory damage, such as colon edema, crypt distortion, goblet cell loss, mononuclear cell infiltration, etc.…”

“…Milk consumption especially in school children has also increased (Du et al 2004;Fraser 2004;Liu et al 2004;Zhang et al 2004). Crohn's disease particularly in young people is increasing in China (Sung et al 1994;Leong et al 2004;Zheng et al 2004). Our data suggest that there is a substantial public health need to determine whether viable M. avium subspecies paratuberculosis is present in retail milk in China and to assess the burden of subclinical as well as clinical infection in farm animals.…”

“…Over the last 20 years the production (http:// www.stats.gov.cn, http://www.dac.com.cn) and consumption (Yu et al 2001;Du et al 2004;Fraser 2004;Liu et al 2004;Zhang et al 2004) of cow's milk has substantially increased in China where the incidence of CD is also rising (Sung et al 1994;Leong et al 2004;Zheng et al 2004). The present preliminary study on a limited number of subjects was carried out to determine whether M. avium subspecies paratuberculosis infection could be detected in the chronically inflamed intestinal tissues of Chinese patients having surgery for CD in China.…”

“…The goal of CD therapy is the same as that of UC therapy, that is, to induce and maintain remission and to reduce the frequency of complication so as to improve the patient's quality of life. [8] 2. The selection of the therapeutic program is mainly determined by the activity, severity and location of the disease, and by the patient's response to and tolerance of treatment in the active phase of CD.…”
