Abstract:Neisseria meningitidis, a human-specific bacterium, is responsible for meningitis and fatal fulminant systemic disease. Bacteria colonize blood vessels, rapidly causing devastating vascular damage despite a neutrophil-rich inflammatory infiltrate. How this pathogen escapes the neutrophil response is unknown.
