Colonization of America by Drosophila Subobscura: Spatial and Temporal Lethal-gene Allelism

Abstract: About twenty years ago Drosophila subobscura, a western Palearctic species, colonized both North and South America. Lethal genes in the O chromosome has been subject to much research. Lethal gene allelisms between American populations far away have been studied. These allelisms were not negligible, but all cases were due to the lethal gene completely associated to the O5 chromosomal inversion. Here we analyze the lethal genes in a new American population of D. subobscura (Centralia, Washington), located fairly… Show more

“…The similarity between North and South America Our analysis of the Odh gene confirms the high degree of genetic resemblance between North and South American populations previously demonstrated in other studies Balanyà et al 1994;Rozas and Aguadé 1991;Mestres et al 1990;Solé et al 2000). All O 5 chromosomal lines have the same haplotype in both North and South America.…”

“…In American populations lethal genes do not distribute at random among the different chromosomal arrangements , in some cases being significantly associated with particular arrangements. This is the case for the complete association observed between the O 5 inversion and a lethal gene and for the partial association between the O 3+4+7 chromosomal arrangement and another lethal gene (Mestres et al 1990;Solé et al 2000). These associations were found in both North and South American populations suggesting that the colonizations were not independent (Mestres et al 1992).…”

“…In the present study, the following North and South American colonizing populations have been used: Gilroy (37°00Ј N), Davis (38°33Ј N), and Eureka (40°49Ј N) (California); Medford (42°20Ј N) and Salem (44°57Ј N) (Oregon); Centralia (46°43Ј N) and Bellingham (48°45Ј N) (Washington); Santiago de Chile (33°30Ј S), Laja (37°10Ј S), Valdivia (39°46Ј S), Puerto Montt (41°28Ј S) and Coihaique (45°35Ј S) (Chile); Bariloche (41°11Ј S) (Argentina). The relevant data of these populations can be found in previous articles (8)(9)(10)(11)(12).…”
