Colonial nesting behaviour in Indian Pond Heron (Ardeola grayii grayii) of Bangladesh

Abstract

A study was conducted on the nesting behaviour of Indian Pond Heron in Sitakunda, southeastern region of Bangladesh between January, 1995 and December, 1996. Indian Pond Heron is a solitary bird on its feeding grounds. It forms colonies when nesting. Eight species of plants were used for nest building in three colonies. Colonial nesting is an anti-predator adaptation in the Indian Pond Heron.

Activity pattern of white-breasted waterhen (Amaurornis phoenicurus) at Jahangirnagar university campus, Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh

Several studies on pond heron, bronze-winged Jacana, red wattled lapwing and other birds are available (Begum 2000(Begum , 2001(Begum , 2002(Begum , 2003Joarder 1997, Sultana et al 2004, Islam 1995, Akhtar et al 2007. Previous studies on white breasted waterhen are limited to little information on its food habits and habitats, but detailed study on the activity patterns of white-breasted waterhen in its different habitats is still lacking.…”

Role of Ficus spp. in the avifauna conservation of Jahangirnagar University campus

“…The university campus is the suitable habitat of 180 species of birds including 33 species of waders (Mohsanin & Khan, 2009). Several studies on ecology and behaviour of different bird species in Jahangirnagar university campus were conducted (Begum, 2000(Begum, , 2001(Begum, , 2002(Begum, , 2003Joarder, 1997;Akhtar et al, 2007Akhtar et al, , 2009. Only a preliminary survey was conducted on Ficus species in Jahangirnagar university campus (Azmiri, 2011) but there is no information available on the dependency of avifauna on Ficus.…”
