Colon Capsule Endoscopy in the Diagnosis of Colon Polyps: Who Needs a Colonoscopy?

Abstract: Colon screening programs have reduced colon cancer mortality. Population screening should be minimally invasive, safe, acceptably sensitive, cost-effective, and scalable. The range of screening modalities include guaiac or immunochemical fecal occult blood testing and CT colonography and colonoscopy. A number of carefully controlled studies concur that second-generation capsule endoscopy has excellent sensitivity for polyp detection and a high negative predictive value. Colon capsules fulfill the screening exp… Show more

“…In fact, mild adverse events occurred in 7.4% patients during CCE-2, mostly related to colon preparation, no severe adverse events occurred and none CCE was retained, which is in line with previous studies [18]. Completeness and colon preparation quality are relevant factors associated with missed lesions and our results reflected the published data [19]. In our study, despite 28.7% CCE were incomplete, only 6.3% patients could not achieve a complete colon examination after CCE after CCE, strengthening the role of CCE in patients with incomplete colonoscopy.…”

“…With regard to small intestinal CD, SBCE is established as the most sensitive mucosal imaging modality when compared to barium follow-up, MRI, and CT enterography and colonoscopy with terminal ileoscopy. Unlike SBCE and ileo-colonoscopy, PCC delivers video images of the entire digestive tract, offering the opportunity to stage and monitor the disease from stomach to rectum with a single minimally invasive investigation [1][2][3]. This review indicates that, currently, there is considerable heterogeneity in the published reports.…”

“…Two subsequent generations of SBCE were developed to improve battery efficiency, field of vision, and image resolution. A number of publications have reported the superiority and safety of SBCE for the grading of the severity and extent of small bowel CD, and the third-generation capsule is now firmly established in the Crohn's disease management pathway [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9].…”

“…There has been widespread adoption of colon screening programs for detecting adenomas and early stages of cancer, with the optimal age decreasing over the years, resulting in a greater demand for screening services. 40 42 CCE is an attractive option for patients undergoing colon screening due to its minimally invasive nature.…”
