Colloidal Synthesis of Non‐Equilibrium Wurtzite‐Type MnSe

Abstract: Stabilizing an elusive phase: The wurtzite polymorph of the magnetic semiconductor MnSe, which is also the x=1 end member of the widely studied Zn1−xMnxSe solid solution, was synthesized in high yield for the first time as colloidal nanoparticles using a solution chemistry technique at low temperature (see pictures). Nanoparticles of wurtzite‐type MnSe have an optical bandgap of approximately 3.5–3.8 eV and show evidence of antiferromagnetic ordering at 64 K.

“…(2 0 2) crystallographic planes of the hexagonal WZ MnSe structure and are consistent to earlier works [17,18]. The MnSe 2 phase, as evident from the peaks at $23.8 and 31.4 , is likely to exist in the form of trace amount of byproduct [17]. On the other hand, a mixed phase of WZ MnSe, WZ CdSe and cubic CdMnSe can be retrieved for Cd 1 À x Mn x Se QDs, and for x = 0.3 and 0.8.…”

“…7(b) depicts a set of M $ H hysteresis plots of the nanoparticle systems with x = 0.3 and 1, measured at 20 K. Essentially, the QDs are paramagnetic in nature. Nevertheless, the T N value in our case (for x = 1) is close to the reported WZ type, spherical shaped and water droplet-shaped MnSe nanoparticles [15,17].…”

“…There have also been several reports of non-equilibrium phases in semiconductor NPs. [4][5][6][7] For multicomponent metal NPs, metastable phases [8][9][10][11] are well known. In some instances, metastable phases frustrate efforts to obtain equilibrium phases.…”
