Present work deals with process refinement, fabrication, and testing of a novel contoured passive thermal protection system (TPS), based on aluminosilicate fiber reinforced silica matrix composite. Taguchi method‐based statistical approach was employed to understand the effect of process parameters such as thickness, layer density, stacking sequence and firing temperature on dielectric properties, flexural strength, and bulk density of composites. Analysis of variance was performed to ensure the statistical significance. The developed TPS was characterized for thermal insulation properties by testing under infrared heating conditions. The science behind the insulation characteristics of the TPS was analyzed using FTIR, XRD, and SEM to understand the associated high‐temperature phase transitions. Present study has shown that, the back‐face temperature exponentially decays with TPS thickness. For TPS having 9 mm thickness, the back‐face temperature was found to be below 100°C when the front face was exposed to 1000°C. The insulation index was found to be increasing with increase in temperature and TPS thickness. Improved thermal insulation characteristics of TPS are due to energy consuming processes such as crystalline changes and micro cracks formation.

Fly ash is considered one of the major hazardous pollutants around the globe. Every year a million tonnes of fly ash is disposed of into the fly ash ponds which are major sites of pollution. The major fractions of fly ash are silicates, aluminates, and ferrous substances followed by minor traces element oxides. The aluminates and silicates comprise of 70% of the fly ash. The aluminates and silicates are present in fly ash in the form of crystalline mullites and sillimanites. Mullites being inert and crystalline are retractile to mineral acids. So, here the authors have reported a novel and simple step for the recovery of all the major elements of fly ash along with recovery of mullites by using hydrofluoric acid at room temperature. The method comprises of treatment of fly ash with diluted hydrofluoric acid for 12 hours under agitation. The recovered white color mullite powder, rod shaped of size 90-300 nm, was analyzed by the sophisticated instruments for the confirmation of the mullite particles.

This work focuses on research on obtaining and characterizing Al2O3/ZrO2 materials formed via slip casting method. The main emphasis in the research was placed on environmental aspects and those related to the practical use of ceramic materials. The goal was to analyze the environmental loads associated with the manufacturing of Al2O3/ZrO2 composites, as well as to determine the coefficient of thermal expansion of the obtained materials, classified as technical ceramics. This parameter is crucial in terms of their practical applications in high-temperature working conditions, e.g., as parts of industrial machines. The study reports on the four series of Al2O3/ZrO2 materials differing in the volume content of ZrO2. The sintering process was preceded by thermogravimetric measurements. The fabricated and sintered materials were characterized by dilatometric study, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and stereological analysis. Further, life cycle assessment was supplied. Based on dilatometric tests, it was observed that Al2O3/ZrO2 composites show a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than that resulting from the content of individual phases. The results of the life cycle analysis showed that the environmental loads (carbon footprint) resulting from the acquisition and processing of raw materials necessary for the production of sinters from Al2O3 and ZrO2 are comparable to those associated with the production of plastic products such as polypropylene or polyvinyl chloride.
