Colloidal Defect-Free Silicalite-1 Single Crystals: Preparation, Structure Characterization, Adsorption, and Separation Properties for Alcohol/Water Mixtures

Abstract: In this work, colloidal silicalite-1 single crystals are for the first time synthesized using fluoride as mineralizing agent at near neutral pH. SEM, TEM, DLS, XRD, solid-state (29)Si MAS NMR, and adsorption/desorption experiments using nitrogen, water, n-butanol, and ethanol as adsorbates were used to characterize the crystals. The single crystals have a platelike habit with a length of less than 170 nm and an aspect ratio (length/width) of about 1.2, and the thickness of the crystals is less than 40 nm. Comp… Show more

“…These values correspond well with literature values for silicalite-1 crystals. [53][54][55][56] The extent of membrane formation through silicalite-1 pore plugging synthesis was examined using SEM ( Figure 3) and EDS (Figure 4) analysis of the cross-section for four different support pore sizes. Cross-sectional analysis of the membrane is an effective assessment of the formation of the zeolite selective layer via pore plugging synthesis, since the formation of a zeolite film on the surface is not the goal of this approach.…”

“…Indeed, decreasing the crystal size induces a distribution of SieO bonds and SieOeSi angles that broadens the lines. The same observation was recently reported for nanosized silicalite-1 prepared in fluoride media [28]. Further huge broadening is noted upon changing the morphology to lamellar as we already stated it (Fig.…”

“…The MFI crystals grown in alkaline media (Si‐MFI‐OH) adsorb 0.11 g butanol g −1 crystals, which is similar to previously reported . A slightly higher butanol adsorption (0.12–0.13 g g −1 ) is observed for MFI crystals grown in fluoride media, indicating that these crystals are more hydrophobic than crystals grown in OH − media . A butanol adsorption of 0.16 g g −1 zeolite was observed for the 5000 nm large Si‐CHA crystals grown in F − media.…”
