Understanding of nanoparticle impacts on critical bacteria functions allows us to gain a mechanistic understanding of toxicity and guides us towards design rules for creating safe nanomaterials. Herein and using analytical techniques, biofilm formation, a general bacteria function, and riboflavin secretion, a species-specific function, were monitored in Shewanella oneidensis, a metal reducing bacterium, following exposure to a variety of TiO2 nanoparticle types (synthesized, Aeroxide P25, and T-Eco). TEM images show that dosed nanoparticles are in close proximity to the bacteria but they are not internalized. Using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), it was revealed that S. oneidensis biofilm formation is slowed in the presence of nanoparticles. Though S. oneidensis grows more slowly in the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles, riboflavin secretion, a function related to the S. oneidensis metal reducing capacity, was increased significantly in a nanoparticle dose-dependent manner. Both changes in biofilm formation and riboflavin secretion are supported by changes in gene expression in nanoparticle-exposed S. oneidensis. This broad study of bacterial nanotoxicity, including use of sensitive analytical tools for functional assessments of biofilm formation, riboflavin secretion, and gene expression has implications for total ecosystem health as the use of engineered nanoparticles grows.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies aiming at tackling CO2 emission have attracted much attention from scientists of various backgrounds. Most CCS systems require an efficient adsorbent to remove CO2 from sources such as fossil fuels (pre‐combustion) or flue gas from power generation (post‐combustion). Research on developing efficient adsorbents with a substantial capacity, good stability and recyclability has grown rapidly in the past decade. Because of their high surface area, highly porous structure, and high stability, various nanoporous materials have been viewed as good candidates for this challenging task. Here, recent developments in several classes of nanoporous materials, such as zeolites, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), mesoporous silicas, carbon nanotubes, and organic cage frameworks, for CCS are examined and potential future directions for CCS technology are discussed. The main criteria for a sustainable CO2 adsorbent for industrial use are also rationalized. Moreover, catalytic transformations of CO2 to other chemical species using nanoporous catalysts and their potential for large scale carbon capture and utilization (CCU) processes are also discussed. Application of CCU technologies avoids any potential hazard associated with CO2 reservoirs and allows possible recovery of some running cost for CO2 capture by manufacturing valuable chemicals.

The major advances in the field of the designed construction of hierarchically structured porous inorganic or hybrid materials wherein multiscale texturation is obtained via the combination of aerosol or spray processing with sol-gel chemistry, self-assembly and multiple templating are the topic of this review. The available materials span a very large set of structures and chemical compositions (silicates, aluminates, transition metal oxides, nanocomposites including metallic or chalcogenides nanoparticles, hybrid organic-inorganic, biohybrids). The resulting materials are manifested as powders or smart coatings via aerosol-directed writing combine the intrinsic physical and chemical properties of the inorganic or hybrid matrices with defined multiscale porous networks having a tunable pore size and connectivity, high surface area and accessibility. Indeed the combination of soft chemical routes and spray processing provides "a wind of change" in the field of "advanced materials". These strategies give birth to a promising family of innovative materials with many actual and future potential applications in various domains such as catalysis, sensing, photonic and microelectronic devices, nano-ionics and energy, functional coatings, biomaterials, multifunctional therapeutic carriers, and microfluidics, among others.
